Road to ReMission

It’s no secret that our society and the Church are in a season of rapid and dynamic reformation. What is a secret is how the Church evolves (reforms) in this season so we can continue to bring healing and wholeness to our fragmented world.

Jesus said the primary way folks will be able to identify his followers is how they love. That begs the question: Is it that easy? Really? Do we simply "Just Love" people? We've been exploring that question for the past five years. We think it's not just the answer but the framework for how we can bring real and lasting transformation to folks, both inside and outside of the Church and to the Church itself.

Zac is a board-certified chaplain with over a decade of experience in healthcare chaplaincy and former Pastor of Madisonville Presbyterian Church in Madisonville, La. Finding the Sacred in the Everyday

Just as the shoes we wear keep us from feeling the ground, the world we live in produces inattention and distraction. The antidote to inattention and distraction is spiritual practice,  something done with regularity and intention. Spiritual practice doesn't have to mean doing yoga or praying the rosary, or any of the other ways people think of when they think of spiritual practice. A spiritual practice could be cooking, running, gardening, crocheting, or creating art. This workshop explores how to create the mindset to turn those activities into spiritual practice.

Carol Madere, First Christian Church, Baton Rouge, LA

Carol Madere, Ph.D., a member of First Christian Church in Baton Rouge and a lifelong Disciple, invites you to explore pathways to a deeper spirituality by connecting with the world around us, the environment in which we already live, in a different way.

Calamity, Catastrophe and Covid … Oh, my.

Are you a Master of Disaster?  Do you find that no matter the situation facing your church, you know exactly what to do? If so, that’s amazing and more than a little unbelievable. However, if you’re anything like the rest of us, mere mortals, it seems like there are new challenges popping up that you and your board have to deal with on the regular and you don’t always know where to start. Please join us as we talk about how best to prepare for and navigate the unexpected.

Pam Jones, First Christian Church, Baton Rouge, LA

Pam Jones has been a member of First Christian Church of Baton Rouge (DOC) since 1998 and has served in a variety of positions and on various committees over the years. Most recently she held a position on the Board for five consecutive years - two as Vice Chair and three as Board Chair. During that time, FCCBR experienced the pandemic and introducing a live stream program, loss of both the minister and the church office admin, impact of Hurricane Ida, the search process and hiring of another minister as well as all the day-to-day things that pop up along the way. During this tumultuous but ultimately rewarding period, bonds were forged and insights were gained … not to mention more than a few grey hairs. But hey, that’s just providing a reason to be more colorful.

Disaster Response

WHAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Many have asked how they can help after Hurricane Helene and with the upcoming needs after Milton. Disciples are responding together and can connect right now in incredibly meaningful ways:

~ PRAY ~
The prayers of the faithful are powerful and effective. - James 5:17

~ GIVE ~

The greatest need is for financial contributions. Monetary gifts are the most critical, useful, and flexible way to be present in the immediate relief effort AND to provide a foundation for the inevitable years-long recovery of affected communities.

A financial gift right now can be shared with partners on the ground, who are closest to the impact, know what is most needed in a community, and where it can be found. It also means support for long-term plans as they come into place. As ecumenical partners and local response teams strategize together, having financial support already in place makes us a more engaged and nimble partner, ready to get to work when and how we are needed.

100% of all contributions designated 'Hurricane 2024' will go directly to these responses.

Gifts can be made online or mailed to Week of Compassion, PO Box 1986, Indianapolis, IN 46206.

~ STAY ~

While we are preparing for next steps in this very long-term recovery, there are a few very hands-on and practical ways to serve Helene survivors right now, but Crisis Cleanup is one urgent need that anyone can do from home:

>>> There is an urgent need for virtual volunteers. Through our partners at Crisis CleanUp, volunteers can serve from home, helping staff the crisis call center that connects affected households with cleanup assistance. With 1000+ calls in the queue, even while most impacted areas are still without power and phone service, this is a massive effort, and volunteers are urgently needed and will be for at least a month or more. You can find more information here.

>>>  CWS CleanUp Buckets. We will be building Cleanup buckets at the Regional Assembly in Baton Rouge, LA, Nov 1-3. You can participate in building these buckets at the Assembly, and you or your congregation can donate to buy the supplies for those buckets at https://grrdisciples.org/donate/ and choose the disaster relief fund. Each bucket will cost approximately $50. Please reach out to Ronny if you want more information about this opportunity.

>>> Volunteer:  While Week of Compassion is not yet coordinating in-person volunteer options, there will be a significant need for volunteers in the months and even years to come, in many locations. Taking the time now to complete a volunteer profile will add you to our records to receive information and updates when in-person opportunities become available.

The need is great and will continue for many months and years.  Feel free to reach out to Rev. Ronny Nowell, Disaster Response Coordinator of the Great River Region, for more info and opportunities.
